MLB 2021

The papers in New York and the media in general had two disturbing stories about the New York Mets recently ...

(1) Jacob deGrom is working on building up his arm strength in his right forearm throwing off flat ground. He apparently wants to make one last start this season.

https://www.si.com/mlb/mets/news/me...-season-syndergaard-to-begin-rehab-assignment

This would be a really dumb move by the Mets doctors and team ownership. The team physicians should not allow him medical clearance and rightly so. He's on the 60 day IL for a reason. So Mets fans scratch that off your Christmas list.

(2) The Mets $341 million dollar star player Francisco Lindor wants Steve Cohen and team ownership to fork over a bundle of cash to sign his good friend Javier Báez to
play second base next year.

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/...se-owner-steve-cohen-can-afford-new-contract/

The thing is that the Mets still owe $48 million dollars to the incumbent second baseman Robinson Cano. So they didn't pay Cano his $24 million this year because of the suspension for PEDs. But his contract calls for $24 million in 2022 and $24 million in 2023. So Mets fans take that out of your Christmas stocking. Signing Báez won't be happening either.

They collectively have 12 games to lose 9. It is looking like the 300 mark will not be hit.

The Giants are running out the clock on the Dodgers. A magic number of 3 with 4 to play.

The Giants won a squeeker last night. 1-0 over the Diamondbacks. Kris Bryant hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. It brought in Steven Dugger. Dugger pinch ran for Tommy LaStella, then stole second, then advanced to third base on a LaMonte Wade Jr. sacrifice bunt and scored on Bryant's sacrifice fly.

Though the Dodgers stayed in the race.

The Dodgers, who were trailing 9-5 in the seventh inning, launched five home runs in the late innings. Mookie Betts hit a 413 foot home run off Daniel Hudson to left center field in the seventh inning. The home run derby then started in the eighth inning. With Emelio Pagan pitching, Max Muncy started it up hitting a 435 foot shot to deep center field. His 36th of the season. Then A.J. Pollock hit his second home run of the game, a 402 foot shot to right center field. Up comes Cody Bellinger. He launches a 429 foot home run to right field. Pagan gives up back to back to back jacks in the inning. Justin Turner then doubled. Enough of Pagan. Nabit Crismatt comes in and gets Mookie Betts to fly out. However Turner steals third base. Not to be undone, Corey Seager hits his 13th of the season to right center field. A two run shot.

Final score: Dodgers 11 Friars 9. What was manager Jayce Tingler thinking? Emelio Pagan should be sent off to DFA Land!

https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/lo...-to-get-rid-of-manager-jayce-tingler/2729461/

A.J. Preller should also be fired as the General Manager. Since the All Star break, when the Padres were 13 games over at 53-40 and six games out. But since August 9th, they are the major leagues worst team, going 25-40. They are now 26 games out. They lost the Wild Card run allowing the red-hot Cardinals to take over and win the 2nd NL Wild Card seed flat out.

Time to rid themselves of the cancer called the Preller Factor. I've disliked him since the Drew Pomeranz trade to the Red Sox. He traded the big lefty to the Red Sox and failed to disclose to the Red Sox the pitcher's medical history. As a result of that, Major League Baseball gave Preller a one month suspension without pay.

Every game started at 3 pm yesterday. It was strange.

Here's what happened on games 162:

The Giants took the NL West title with an 11-4 win over the Padres.
The Dodgers won the first seed NL Wild Card with a 10-3 win over the Brewers.
The Brewers, the NL Central title winners, clinched that title on September 26, 2021.
The Braves, the NL East title holders, had a 5-0 win over the Mets.
The Cardinals, the second seed NL Wild Card holders, lost to the Cubs, 3-2.

The Toronto Blue Jays swamped the Orioles, 12-4 to stay alive in the AL Wild Card race for a few hours.
The Seattle Mariners succumbed to the Angels, 7-3 to end their season. No playoff berths for them.

The Red Sox won late. A 7-5 win over the Nationals. They took over the first Wild Card berth.
The Yankees won late. A 1-0 victory over the Tampa Rays to win the second AL Wild Card.
The Tampa Rays won the AL East title a week ago on September 25, 2021. For the American League, everything comes out of Tampa.
The White Sox, the AL Central title winners, lost to the Tigers, 5-2.
The Astros, the AL West title winners, won late against the A's, a 7-6 bottom of the ninth inning squeaker.

Notable happenings:

Zack Greinke made an almost three inning relief appearance for the Astros. Max Muncy, the Dodger first baseman, was hurt on a play at first base. Will Smith's fielded a squibbler off the plate and his throw went into the batter/runner. Jace Peterson runner knocked off Muncy's glove, but Muncy injured his left elbow very badly on the play. He left the diamond holding his wrist. Albert Pujols took over. Muncy is very doubtful for the Wild Card game and probably won't play in the NLDS series against the Giants. A big blow to the Dodgers offense.

My early predictions:

The Brewers, losers of five of six to end the season, showed me nothing against the Dodgers. I expect the Braves to take them out in the other NLDS. The Cardinals, the NL's hot team winners of a 2021 NL best seventeen straight in September, take on the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Too bad Clayton Kershaw has been ruled out in the playoffs. Everyone knows how bad he is against "red" teams. Red uniforms. "Mr. Kerchoke" when he sees red he just melts. The Dodgers may be a surprising "one and done" team here. I really hope so. That Cardinals team is hitting on all eight cylinders. Harrison Bader, Tyler O'Neil, Tommy Edman, Dylan Carlson, Paul DeJong, Nolan Arenado, Yadier Molina and Paul Goldschmidt are hitting extremely well. They match up pretty well against the Dodgers deep lineup. Adam Wainwright, "Mr. Reliable" makes the start for Mike Shildt. Dodgers do have Max Scherzer going on the hill so it should be an interesting game on Wednesday. He was pretty much untouchable since the trade deadline. Though he did have some trouble in his last game last Wednesday, September 29 2021 against the Padres: 5.1 innings 11 hits allowed and six runs given up. The Cardinals fans say "beat LA"-- the whole Midwest of the country is relying on the Cardinals. You know that I'll be rooting for the Cardinals.

Everything in Major League Baseball comes out of San Francisco provided that the Giants team maintains focus and momentum. Gabe Kapler should be the NL Manager of the year.

Let us all cry this morning for the Yankees. Cole was pitching like it was 2015 - only worse.

Yeah that broke my heart. The 3rd base coach waving in Judge when it was clear that it wasn't going to work was the icing on the cake.

Waiting for the playoffs to start.
Well it's over! Very sad. LAD 2 SFG 1 in game five of the NLDS. The San Francisco Giants were eliminated. Did Wilmer Flores check his swing? First base umpire Gabe Morales said no. Though both broadcasters and the videos clearly show that he did.

Gabe Kapler gets NL Manager of the Year hands down. He and his coaches: (1) hitting coaches Justin Viele and Donnie Ecker and (2) pitching coach Andrew Bailey took a team and a pitching staff expected to win just 67 to 72 games by preseason prognosticators and experts ... to ... a best ever 107 victory Giants franchise (both in New York and in San Francisco) record.

Let's go Atlanta Braves!

A huge letdown and a shitty way to end a great season. Morales must have had to get to a date.

Let's go Atanta Braves!
Words I will never utter.

For most of the end of these things, the Dodgers will be the visiting team the rest of the way. Both the Braves and the Astros (both division winners) have the home-field advantage. The only way the Dodgers would get the home field advantage would be against the Red Sox. The Los Angeles Dodgers 106 wins season trumps the Boston Red Sox 92 victories.

Should the Dodgers make the World Series, it will be an interesting sight. For the games in Los Angeles and at Dodger Stadium -- MLB will have to increase their security details. How many Dodger fans still dislike the Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora and the Houston Astros in particular? Should we get a nutjob that goes over the edge because he feels the Dodgers should have been entitled to World Series titles in 2017 and 2018. Now that would be truly be a sad thing.

Hopefully, we don't have an incident like we had in Washington, D.C. earlier this season. Max Scherzer and Trea Turner are all too aware of that!

Offtopic.
Jan 6 or July 17? :)

In an extreme case scenario ...

More like :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Minute_Warning

Sadly, I keep thinking of that old movie, Two Minute Warning (1976) starring Charlton Heston, John Cassavetes, Martin Balsam, David Janssen, Gena Rowlands, Walter Pidgeon, Jack Klugman, Mitchell Ryan, Brock Peters, Juli Bridges, Pamela Bellwood, Marilyn Hassett, David Groh and Beau Bridges. With Warren Miller (as the sniper) ...

... Ironically, the film takes place in Los Angeles.

I would like to see the Braves win but I think the Dodgers are just too loaded. Plus the Braves have a history of falling short.

I would like to see the Braves win ...

With the Dodgers up 2-1, Austin Riley hit a line drive over the left field wall, for a game tying home run.

Now, in a still tied up game 2-2, bottom of the ninth, Freddie Freeman strikes out. One out. Ozzie Albies singles, steals second off Blake Treinen. Austin Riley singles into left field close to the third base line (it would have been a double.) He drives in Albies.

Austin Riley for MVP.

Braves win, 3-2. Game over! :)

I would like to see the Braves win ...

Ex-Dodger Joc Pederson with a tremendous blast into the right field upper deck of Truist Park. A 454 foot shot that ties the game up at 2. Sweet revenge! :)

Same scenario as last night. With the Braves trailing 4-2, Julio Urias pitching. Eddie Rosario scores on an RBI single to right field by Ozzie Albies. Very close play at the plate. The next batter Austin Riley doubles to deep center field over the head of Mookie Betts. Ozzie Albies scores from first base on another close play at the plate. A tied up game 4-4.

Tonight, two new heroes ...

Bottom of the ninth, two outs, Kenley Jansen replaces Brusdar Graterol. His first pitch to Eddie Rosano gets hit into center field for a single. Danson Swanson scores from second base.

Braves win 5-4. Game over! :)

With a little luck ....

The Braves are half way there. They are up 2-0 in the series. Now off to Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium. Who'd have figured? Hehe. ;)
